Dive Kona 2/6/2009

Dive 1

Name:Eel Cove
Depth:40 feet
Bottom Time:50mins
This was a nice dive. Joy, Wiwig and myself along with our Captain/Divemaster dove on this one.  The water was warm, almost like the tropics and the visibility was great. We saw lots of tropical fishes and I think Wiwig saw an eel.

Dive 2

Name:Kaiwi
Depth:30 feet
Bottom Time:35mins
This dive was also a nice dive. There was hardly any waves on the surface. There was another  scuba boat nearby who also had some divers. There were more fishes here. We saw some Puffer and Orange Tangs on this dive also.

My cousin Andrew (M. Wiwig) invited us for a Hawaiin get-away, Joy and I kinda made it a point to see if we could fit a dive in our itenerary.  M. Wiwig also liked the idea of diving since he is an experienced diver himself and has never dove in Hawaii even though he has been in Hawaii more than any of us.  While we were strolling the shops near the ocean front we came to Honu Sports which charter scuba dives. I signed up for the Friday morning dive  for three divers, Joy, M. Wiwig and myself.

  M. Rico drove us to the dock early Friday morning. Where we met Lisa Christensen who owns Honu Sports, is our captain and our divemaster. After a quick introduction she began  to put her boat in the water. When the boat was in the water, we were all set to set sail to our first dive site.

There were no other divers going with us, only the three of us. This is good, because it's like a private charter. At least Lisa will have less divers to accommodate.  It was a quick trip to our first dive site. We were all excited, we were told that the water was going to be warm, but we really did not know what to expect. The water was indeed warm, we only wore a 5mm wetsuit  which was a shorty, no gloves and no hoods, and it was pretty comfortable. We did not go very deep on this trip which was ok, we saw colorful fishes which you would not see if you dive in California.

Lisa was very helpful and attended to our needs. We were very satisfied with her services and would not hesitate to dive with her again, in the event that we visit the big island again.  We would highly recommend to anyone to use her charter, it's better than going on those big scuba ships with 20 other divers. At least with Lisa it's more of a personal attention to each diver.

On our way back to the shore, we saw two humpback whales. It was a mother whale and a baby whale. This was the very first time I ever saw them. You can see them blow at a regular interval. Lisa  said that it was just too bad that we were not that close to the whales when we dove, it would have been a great experience. Yes, I would have loved to see a whale up close - I might even be scared.  Maybe next time Lisa, maybe we'll get to see the whales, but before that, I'll probably opt to do a night dive with the Mantas.
