Channel Islands Scuba Diving 12/27/2008

Dive 1

Name:Frenchy's Wall
Depth:60 feet
Bottom Time:45mins
We saw some big fish (I don't know what kind they were), lot's of sea urchins, and the kelp forest.  This was relatively a deep dive, and Paul was really good with underwater navigation, we did not get lost. This was Paul's  first dive in the U.S. and he complains about the very cold temperature. The water was about 57 degrees farenheit.

Dive 2

Name:Anacapa Island
Depth:30 feet
Bottom Time:50mins
After the first dive, there was a second dive that Paul and I skipped. I just wanted to rest, while Paul  wanted to regain sensation on his hands. The dive master said that the second dive site was not very interesting, so we  saw it out. On what was supposed to be our 3rd dive, we went on it. It was a shallow dive and a leisurely one.

When Joy and I were in the Philippines early this year, I told Paul that if he comes to  the states that we should go diving. So when plans got finalized for him and his family to come, diving was part of his vacation  itenerary. I booked a dive trip with Raptor Dive Charters, based in Ventura, California.

We took the boat from Ventura harbor to Anacapa Island. It was a 45 minute trip. The boat was very fast and we arrive there in no time.  When we were about to stop for the first dive the captain told us that we can suit up. We put on our wet suits and got ready.

The crew was very friendly, and their price was inexpensive. I signed up for the 3-tank dive.  We got to Ventura at 7am for the 8am departure time. To our surprise, there was a conflict in the boat schedule, and the boat was going  to depart at 9am. We had time for breakfast then boarded the boat. There was approximately 15 divers. There were hunters, students, and  scuba enthusiats. It was a mixed group. It's just too bad that the dive shop did not have an underwater camera available for rent. On our  first dive one person joined us, Eric. On our second dive, Eryk and another person joined our group. On both dives, Paul was our divemaster.

Paul was very good in navigating the group around the dive site and back to the boat. He also helped me on the first dive when I had difficulty  getting back to the boat. His only complain was the cold temperature. Nevertheless, the dive went on smoothly and we had lots of fun.

When we got back to shore and returned the equipment, Eric came up to us inside the dive shop. He told the store manager, "Watch out for this one.."  referring to Paul. And the store manager said, "yes, the Dive Instructor from the Philippines!". Evidently, Pauls dive skills have impressed  Eric. Eric was also a good diver. I am just an amateur and am in no way an expert. Currently, I hold an Advance Open Water license. As for Paul,  you're looking at an Instructor, Technical Diver, Nitrox/Enriched Air diver, Dive Master and what have you.

Thank you 'cous for the great dive. You know this is not going to be our last one. Where are we going to dive next? TUBBATAHA perhaps? :-)
